Museums, libraries and archives are of the utmost importance for documenting our history. A large part of our cultural heritage is preserved in these institutions in the form of irreplaceable documents and exhibits. The immeasurable value of unique exhibits, historical artifacts and digital archive data makes their storage locations particularly worthy of protection and places the highest demands on fire protection.
By detecting the source of a fire at the earliest possible stage, the spread of fire can be prevented as quickly as possible. Point-type fire detectors are not up to this task, as they only detect a fire once it has already developed to a certain extent. Extinguishing fires using sprinkler systems is problematic as well. It only takes effect once a fire has spread and, although it would extinguish it, the use of extinguishing water would also severely damage or destroy archive materials that had previously been spared. It is therefore essential to take preventive fire protection measures for documents that are sometimes the last witnesses to historical events, building regulations or their own origins. We offer you individually tailored fire protection solutions for these requirements.
RISIK ANALYSIS
Exhibits and documents made of highly flammable materials such as paper, cardboard, wood, textiles or highly flammable preservation liquids are usually stored in museums, archives or libraries. In the event of fire, it will spread in a matter of seconds. Another fire risk is the often dense storage in a dry atmosphere. However, the often outdated electrical systems in historic buildings, sometimes behind wall paneling, also harbor a certain risk potential for an undetected fire to start and spread quickly.
PROTECTION GOALS
BETTER SOLUTIONS IN FIRE PROTECTION
Our highly sensitive TITANUS® aspirating smoke detectors are an important basis for the protection of values and exhibits in museums, archives and libraries for the earliest possible fire detection that is immune to false alarms. These smoke detectors are able to detect a fire as early as the incipient phase (pyrolysis). This time advantage over conventional point-type detectors means that countermeasures can be initiated in time to stop the fire before it spreads, thus protecting and preserving valuable cultural assets.
Active fire prevention eliminates the risk of fire under defined conditions
The use of our TITANUS® aspirating smoke detectors in combination with OxyReduct® – our active fire prevention system – is particularly suitable for archives. OxyReduct® works on the principle of oxygen reduction in the area to be protected. The oxygen content in the ambient air is reduced to a predefined value by the controlled introduction of nitrogen into the protected area. This prevents the development and spread of a fire. In addition, depending on the time of day or protected area, different residual oxygen concentrations can be flexibly defined, e.g. to maximize the degree of protection at night or in automated archives and depots. Unlike in visitor areas, where the use of sprinkler systems makes sense due to the high frequency of people, sprinklers in storage areas like archives are no longer necessary thanks to OxyReduct®.
Residue-free and non-destructive extinguishing preserves values
An alternative to sprinkler systems and other water-based extinguishing systems are gas extinguishing systems. Our FirExting® fire extinguishing system works with natural gases, which guarantee a quick and, above all, residue-free and non-destructive extinguishing and protect unique and historical assets of artistic and cultural value from destruction.
